Where Do Loons Go When They Disappear?

Where Do Loons Go When They Disappear?

A curious morning at the lake leads Tilly to an unexpected lesson from a loon.

Tilly was sitting by a quiet lake enjoying an early morning snack when she spotted her loon friend diving for something in the water.

Tilly sensed an adventure and decided to watch.

Splash!

The loon disappeared underwater.

Tilly waited. And waited. And waited. Then... POP!

The loon popped up far away with a tiny fish in its beak.

"How did you do that?" asked Tilly.

The loon swallowed the fish. "Do what?"

"Find a fish so far away!"

The loon laughed. "I found it after diving in lots of different places."

Just then, the loon took a deep breath and disappeared beneath the water.

Tilly waited. A moment later, the loon popped up again. No fish.
The loon dove again. Still no fish.

As Tilly watched quietly, the loon kept diving over and over again.

Sometimes it came up with a fish. Most of the time it didn't.

Tilly blinked. "You don't find a fish every time you dive."

The loon shook its head. "Nope. But lots of dives give you lots of chances."

"I think I understand," said Tilly.

The loon tilted its head. "You do?"

"Yep!" said Tilly. "You don't stop after one dive."

The loon smiled. "That’s right. You keep trying different places until you find a fish."

Tilly grinned, "That makes you a diving detective!"

The loon laughed. "I never thought of it that way."

Then the two friends spent the afternoon making the biggest splashes they could.

Neither of them caught any more fish. But they laughed, splashed, and had a lot of fun trying.

Tilly's Thought

If at first you don't find a fish, try a different spot.
