January Has a Reputation - Not Everything Needs Fixing
January has a reputation. New year. New you. Big goals. Fresh start.
All of it is usually shouted at us before we’ve even finished the leftovers or the last leaves have fallen.
Talk about overwhelm!
This year marks the Year of the Fire Horse - bold, passionate, and forward-moving. It officially begins on February 17, 2026, and it’s a rare combination in the Chinese zodiac, showing up only once every 60 years (the last time was 1966).
But even a fire horse doesn’t sprint straight out of the gate in the middle of winter.
It waits.
It gathers strength.
It moves when the timing feels right.
Tilly gets this. She’s a baby polar bear, after all. Winter isn’t something she fights - it’s something she settles into. And maybe that’s exactly what these winter months are meant to be too.
Not a restart.
Just a reset.
Reset Is Not a Reinvention
A restart says: “Everything before this was wrong. Try harder.”
A reset says: “Pause. Breathe. Let’s gently adjust.”
Tilly isn’t interested in resolutions. She’s not setting goals like learn five new skills or wake up at 5 a.m.
She’s doing things like:
- Sleeping a little longer
- Checking in on her friends
- Making sure there are enough snacks
- Paying attention to how she feels
That’s a reset.
If writing things down helps, this is the kind of season our journals were made for - not to plan your whole life, just to hold a few present-moment thoughts.
The Fire Horse Doesn’t Mean Hustle Mode
Yes, the Fire Horse is associated with energy and movement - but energy doesn’t always look loud. Sometimes it looks like rest. Choosing not to push when the ground is still frozen.
Think of January as the warming-up phase.
Noticing what still fits - and what doesn’t.
Tilly would absolutely approve of this approach.
A Very Tilly Winter Reset (Try One, Try None)
No rules here - just options.
- Choose one small thing that makes your day feel softer
- Let go of one thing that’s draining you
- Create one cozy ritual (warm drink, short walk, quiet moment)
- Check in with one person you care about
- Give yourself permission to not have it all figured out
That’s it. That’s the reset.
Before We Rush Ahead…
There will be time for plans.
There will be time for movement.
There will be time to channel that Fire Horse energy.
But for now, winter is still winter.
And Tilly would remind us that slowing down isn’t falling behind - it’s how you stay steady.
